Aletta Henriëtte Jacobs (1854–1929) earned her Doctorate in the University of Amsterdam in 1879,
pioneering the women’s liberation movement. She later opened her practice as a medical doctor
at the Herengracht.
Above, there are images from her publication “The woman” recreating woman’s anatomy in a simple
and informative manner, yet with a firm face that looks for an encounter with the eyes of the
reader, almost re-affirming women’s rights to knowledge.
